Assessment and evaluation are ongoing aspects of
the teaching and learning process and will be based on provincial
curriculum. Evaluation is designed to be equitable and allow for
alternate methods for identified students.
At the beginning of
each course the teacher will provide for the students a clear statement
of the course content and course requirements, an explanation of
evaluation methods and a marks breakdown, along with a description of
the policy for tests and assignments. Students are expected to be
active participants in their own learning by assuming responsibility
for keeping work up-to-date and by regular communication with teachers
and parents.
The final grade for each course in grades 9-12 is determined as follows:
Seventy
percent of the grade (70%) will be based on evaluations conducted
throughout the course. This portion of the grade should reflect the
student's most consistent level of achievement throughout the course, although special consideration should be given to more recent evidence of achievement.
Thirty
percent of the grade (30%) will be based on a final evaluation,
performance, essay, and/or other methods of evaluation suitable to the
course content and administered towards the end of the course.
The
report card focuses on two distinct but related aspects of student
achievement: the achievement of curriculum expectations and the
development of learning skills. A
student must provide a medical certificate for an absence from the
final evaluation unless prior arrangements have been made and approved
by the school administration.
