Special Education Coordinator (I.S.E.H.)
Special Education provides a variety of services to students who are identified as “exceptional”. Students may be identified as having a communication exceptionality (e.g. a learning disability), an intellectual exceptionality, or a behavioural or physical exceptionality. The support given to such a student is determined by the Identification Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) through an annual review. Identified students are monitored on a regular and ongoing basis through the use of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which is regularly updated by subject teachers.
The Interdepartmental Special Education Head (ISEH) coordinates the supports that Quinte offers to all students, but particularly those who are identified as Exceptional by an IPRC. The ISEH works closely with classroom teachers to increase awareness of these students’ learning needs and to facilitate accommodations or program modifications to meet those needs through the use of the IEP. Most student learning needs are supported and met in the regular classroom, although the ISEH also coordinates some partially-segregated Special Education classes within the school. The ISEH also manages the roles of Educational Assistants at Quinte.
The Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) is a local committee mandated by the Ministry of Education to monitor the Board’s special education programs, services and plans. It meets monthly to receive information from Board personnel, and also to make recommendations regarding Special Education issues. Membership is made up of local associations, parents, Board and community representatives. Meetings are open to the public. Interested individuals are welcome to call the Special Education Department at the Board office at 966-1170, ext. 2270, or contact any SEAC member listed in the Special Connections brochure, for more information.
Quinte Secondary also offers various kinds of academic resource support for all students. These may be provided directly in the classroom through Educational Assistants or Peer Tutors. Students also have access through their teachers to the Help Centre, where they can work at a computer or just in a quiet setting, or obtain assistance from an E.A. or Peer Tutor. The Help Centre is also open during a portion of most lunch hours for computer use, quiet work, assistance with organizational or study skills, or help with homework or assignments.
